Who This Service Is For

This service is for narrators, producers and publishers working with difficult audiobook recordings — not content editing, proofreading, narration direction or publishing services. For dialogue-focused restoration, see our podcast audio restoration service.

Independent Authors

Self-published authors who need clearer narration without losing the natural character of their voice.

Audiobook Narrators

Professional narrators who need dialogue cleanup, click reduction and consistent quality across long sessions.

Publishers and Producers

Production teams managing audiobook projects that require reliable restoration and consistent narration quality.

Voiceover Professionals

Voice artists and studios where long-form narration must remain clear, natural and comfortable to listen to.

Common Audiobook Audio Problems

These are the issues I listen for first during assessment. Not every problem can be removed completely — the aim is honest improvement based on what the recording allows.

Background Noise

Fan hum, computer noise, traffic and other distractions present throughout narration sessions.

Mouth Clicks and Lip Noise

Clicks, smacks and lip sounds that break listener focus during long listening sessions.

Uneven Chapter Levels

Chapters recorded at different volumes, forcing listeners to adjust levels between sessions.

Room Sound and Light Echo

Boxy or hollow room tone from untreated spaces, hard surfaces and microphone placement.

Hum and Electrical Noise

Mains hum, buzz, ground loops and interference picked up during recording or transfer.

Breath Inconsistencies

Uneven or distracting breath sounds that affect pacing and listener comfort across chapters.

Changes in Microphone Tone

Shifts in timbre when microphones, rooms or recording setups change between sessions.

Editing Joins and Recording Inconsistencies

Audible seams, level jumps and tonal shifts at edit points or between recording days.

What Can Be Improved

Restoration focuses on making difficult audiobook narration easier to listen to. Depending on the recording, work may improve:

  • Narration clarity
  • Tone consistency
  • Chapter continuity
  • Listener comfort
  • Balance between recording sessions
  • Background noise
  • Distracting clicks and mouth noise
  • Overall presentation

The aim is to preserve the narrator's natural voice — not to create an artificial or overprocessed sound. Narration should still sound like the original performer, just clearer and more consistent.

Audiobook Restoration Process

Free Assessment

Send a short narration sample or chapter. I listen and tell you honestly what can be improved in the audiobook recording.

Problem Diagnosis

I identify the main issues — noise, clicks, level shifts, hum, room sound or clipping — and what each requires.

Narration Restoration

Narration is repaired by hand: noise reduced, clicks treated and problem areas addressed while preserving natural voice character.

Level and Tonal Consistency

Chapters and sessions are balanced so listeners can follow the audiobook without adjusting volume or noticing harsh tonal shifts.

Quality Control and Delivery

Restored files are checked on headphones and speakers, then returned in your preferred format ready for your production workflow.

Consistency Across Long Form Projects

Audiobook recordings are often produced across multiple sessions, rooms, microphones or recording days. That can leave noticeable differences in tone, noise floor and level from one chapter to the next.

Restoration can help create more consistent tone, noise floor, levels, chapter transitions and overall listening experience. Completely different recordings cannot always be made identical, but sessions can often be brought closer together after assessment. For archive or personal recordings, see our family recordings restoration service.

Honest Limitations

Polymiq Audio Lab prioritises honest improvement over artificial sounding results. It is important to understand what restoration can and cannot achieve.

Speech Masked by Noise

Speech completely masked by noise may not be recoverable. If words are buried beneath the problem, they cannot always be brought back.

Severe Clipping

Severe clipping cannot always be fully repaired. Mild overload may improve; heavy distortion often leaves permanent damage.

Strong Room Echo

Strong room echo may remain partly audible. Light room sound can often be improved, but heavily reverberant recordings may retain some character.

Different Microphones and Rooms

Different microphones and rooms may retain some tonal differences. Restoration can often improve consistency, but not always erase every change in capture setup.

Aggressive processing can damage the natural sound of narration. The goal is clearer, more consistent audio that still sounds like the original narrator.

Ongoing Audiobook Projects

Full audiobook projects can be assessed after you send a representative sample or chapter. Chapter by chapter restoration may be available, with consistent processing developed after the first assessment.

Volume pricing for larger projects is discussed individually based on project length, chapter count and the condition of your recordings. There are no fixed package prices — every audiobook is different. Contact me to discuss your project after the initial assessment.

Audiobook Restoration Questions

Can you remove mouth clicks from audiobook narration?

Mouth clicks and lip noise can often be reduced in audiobook narration. How much improvement is possible depends on how prominent the clicks are and the quality of the original recording. Every file is assessed individually before any paid work begins.

Can you reduce background noise across multiple chapters?

Background noise can often be reduced across chapters, although results depend on how consistent the noise is between sessions. Assessment will show what can realistically be improved chapter by chapter.

Can you make different recording sessions sound more consistent?

Restoration can often improve consistency between sessions recorded on different days, in different rooms or with different microphones. Completely different recordings cannot always be made identical, but tone, levels and noise floor can frequently be brought closer together.

Can you improve light room echo?

Light room echo and reverb can sometimes be reduced in narration. Strong or heavily reverberant recordings may retain some audible room sound after restoration.

Can you repair clipped narration?

Mild clipping can sometimes be improved. Severe clipping cannot always be fully repaired, and results depend on how badly the recording was overloaded.

Do you work on complete audiobooks?

Yes. Full audiobook projects and individual chapters can be assessed. Chapter by chapter restoration may be available, with consistent processing developed after the first assessment.

What file formats can I send?

Common formats include WAV, AIFF, MP3, FLAC and M4A. If you are unsure, send what you have — most standard narration exports can be reviewed.

How much does audiobook restoration cost?

Cost depends on recording length, audio condition, number of chapters, consistency problems and the amount of restoration required. Every project begins with a free assessment and a no-obligation quotation before you commit to paid restoration.

How long does audiobook restoration take?

Turnaround depends on project length, complexity and current workload. A typical sample or chapter assessment is usually returned within a few working days. Restoration timing is confirmed with your quotation after assessment.
